New Course for the Autumn

The next course on the series English in the Afternoon begins on 14th October. It will again run for 6 weeks on Thursday afternoons, in 2 blocks of 3 - we will not meet on the first Thursday of November. The title of the course is Poetry and History.

We will begin in the medieval period and cover significant moments in the development of English poetry, looking at how historical developments can be seen to have influenced it. We shall cover the early modern period, the Civil War, the Romantics, and end with post-World War 1 modernist poetry.

As always, the course will be an overview of significant features. No prior knowledge is necessary, the course is free and does not need to be pre-booked. There are no set books and the only charge is for the weekly handout.

The course will run at the Central Library in Southampton where further details will be advertised at the end of September.
